Frequently asked questions
Is Base64 encryption?
No. Base64 is an encoding, not encryption. Anyone can decode it in a second. Use it to move binary data safely through text channels, never to hide a secret. For secrets use the Hash and Checksum Generator or proper encryption.
What is the difference between Base64 and Base64URL?
Base64URL replaces + with - and / with _ and usually drops the = padding, so the result is safe inside a URL or a filename. JWT tokens use Base64URL.
Does it handle non-English text correctly?
Yes. Text is converted to UTF-8 bytes before encoding, so Hindi, Marathi, emoji and any other Unicode round-trip exactly. The plain btoa function in a browser would fail on these.
How big a file can I convert to a data URI?
Files up to about 10 MB work well. Remember that Base64 makes data roughly 33% larger, so a 10 MB file becomes a 13.3 MB string, which is impractical to inline in a stylesheet.
What is the pipeline for?
It applies several transforms in order, for example URL-decode then Base64-decode then pretty-print JSON. It is useful for unpicking a value copied out of a log file or a network trace.
Is Encoder & Decoder Studio free?
Yes. Encoder & Decoder Studio is free for everyone and needs no sign-up to use. An account is only needed to export, download or print, because every export is recorded.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. Encoder & Decoder Studio works inside your web browser, so the files you open are processed on your own device. If you sign in, the work you save (such as drafts and registers) is also kept in your account so it follows you to other devices.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. It works in current versions of Chrome, Edge, Safari and Firefox on phones, tablets and computers, with nothing to install.
