Frequently asked questions

Where does the hashing happen?

In your browser, using the built-in WebCrypto implementation that ships with Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari. Nothing is uploaded, so you can hash confidential files and even disconnect from the network first.

Is MD5 available?

MD5 and SHA-1 are provided for checking legacy checksums only. Both are broken for security purposes: collisions can be produced cheaply, so never use them to verify that a file has not been tampered with. Use SHA-256 or stronger.

What is HMAC for?

HMAC proves that a message came from someone holding a shared secret key. It is what API providers use to sign webhook payloads. Plain hashing cannot do this because anyone can recompute a plain hash.

Can I hash a large file?

Yes. Files are read in chunks and streamed to the digest, so multi-gigabyte files work as long as your machine has the patience. Progress is shown while it runs.

Why do the same bytes give a different hash elsewhere?

Almost always a text encoding or line-ending difference. This tool hashes exact UTF-8 bytes. A file saved with Windows CRLF line endings hashes differently from the same file with Unix LF endings.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. Hash & Checksum Generator works inside your web browser, so the files you open are processed on your own device. If you sign in, the work you save (such as drafts and registers) is also kept in your account so it follows you to other devices.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. It works in current versions of Chrome, Edge, Safari and Firefox on phones, tablets and computers, with nothing to install.
