Frequently asked questions

How is reading time calculated?

At 225 words per minute for silent reading and 150 for reading aloud, which are the figures used by most publishing style guides. Speaking time assumes a measured presentation pace.

What counts as a word?

Any run of characters separated by whitespace, after collapsing repeated spaces. Hyphenated compounds count as one word. The count matches what Microsoft Word reports for ordinary prose.

Does it handle Hindi, Marathi or other Indic text?

Yes. Character counting uses Unicode code points rather than UTF-16 units, so conjuncts, matras and emoji are counted as users see them rather than as byte pairs.

Is my text stored anywhere?

No. Everything happens in the page. Nothing is written to a server, and the text is not kept after you close the tab unless you download it.

What does the readability score mean?

It is the Flesch Reading Ease score. Above 60 is plain English suited to a general audience, 30 to 60 is fairly difficult and typical of business writing, and below 30 is dense academic or legal prose.

Is Text Toolkit free?

Yes. Text Toolkit is free for everyone and needs no sign-up to use. An account is only needed to export, download or print, because every export is recorded.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. Text Toolkit works inside your web browser, so the files you open are processed on your own device. If you sign in, the work you save (such as drafts and registers) is also kept in your account so it follows you to other devices.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. It works in current versions of Chrome, Edge, Safari and Firefox on phones, tablets and computers, with nothing to install.
