Frequently asked questions

Does this look up a real challan or vehicle record?

No, and it makes no network request at all. Live RC and challan data comes from Parivahan and state transport portals, which require authentication. This tool validates formats, decodes codes, and computes penalties and due dates offline.

How do I read an Indian registration number?

The standard format is two letters for the state, two digits for the RTO office, one or two letters for the series, and up to four digits. MH12AB1234 is Maharashtra, RTO 12 (Pune), series AB, number 1234. BH-series numbers for transferable vehicles use a different layout starting with the year.

What is a VIN check digit?

The ninth character of a 17-character VIN, calculated from the other sixteen by a weighted sum. If the character does not match the calculation, the number has been mistyped or tampered with. The check is mandatory in North America and widely used elsewhere.

Are the penalty amounts accurate?

They follow the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act 2019 as commonly applied, but states set their own compounding amounts under section 200 and several have reduced them. Treat the figure as an upper reference and confirm with the issuing state.

Why track document expiry here?

Because the penalty for driving without valid insurance or a PUC certificate is far higher than the cost of renewal, and both lapse silently. The tracker shows days remaining and flags anything expiring within 30 days.

Is Vehicle & Challan Reference free?

Yes. Vehicle & Challan Reference is free for everyone and needs no sign-up to use. An account is only needed to export, download or print, because every export is recorded.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. Vehicle & Challan Reference works inside your web browser, so the files you open are processed on your own device. If you sign in, the work you save (such as drafts and registers) is also kept in your account so it follows you to other devices.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. It works in current versions of Chrome, Edge, Safari and Firefox on phones, tablets and computers, with nothing to install.
